Twelve years ago, I fell head over heels in love with Lories, also known as Lorikeets! I eagerly purchased my first pair of Rainbows from a breeder who was selling his last two pairs. However, I must admit that I had done minimal research on their dietary and husbandry requirements, leaving me somewhat unprepared to provide them with the appropriate diet.
I was completely unaware of the immense challenge of sourcing a high-quality food source. I made several calls to various retail stores in my area at the time, only to discover that most of them exclusively carried colored pellets, which I was informed were the standard food for these birds. Nothing could be further from the truth!
Over the past 12 years, I have meticulously built my collection of lories and learned everything I could from my esteemed colleague and mentor, the last largest lory breeder in the country. A crucial aspect of ensuring lories’ happiness and well-being lies in providing them with a nutritious diet. Lories thrive best on a wet nectar diet, supplemented with low-iron, safe fruits, and some vegetables.
Since many companies promote diets that compromise on quality, offering marketing gimmicks that claim customers can feed pellets or an all-dry diet, resulting in less mess, I decided to provide high-quality products. With the help of my mentor, in 2022 we formulated our nectar diets that derive from her base recipe that have been used for over three decades. I also implemented other nutritionally sounds ingredients, based on what other Lory keepers used in their own diets.
With a limited selection of high-quality commercial lory food available on the market today, my primary objective is to contribute to the preservation and conservation of these magnificent birds. Many lory species are now rare, both in captivity and in the wild. Providing them with a nutritious diet is crucial for their survival and can help prevent their extinction in the United States.
I am proud to offer such high-quality diets to pet homes, rescues, retailers, zoos, and exhibits!
